March 31, 2015

KBR Building Group recently hosted the 2015 Industry Day event at the North Carolina Education Building located in the Capital complex in downtown Raleigh. Joining us as participants and co-organizers were North Carolina’s Department of Administration, Department of Commerce, and Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor for Historically Underutilized Business (HUB) Outreach.

“Now in its third year, Industry Day brings together public agencies, private agencies, universities, and developers from across the region to provide an overview of upcoming design and construction opportunities slated to begin within the next 12 to 24 months,” explained KBR Building Group’s Garland Burton, Director of Community Affairs and Diversity.

North Carolina Secretary of Administration Bill Daughtridge, Jr., along with Deputy Secretary Bill Bryan, led a discussion on the proposed “Project Phoenix” — the planned reconstruction and renovation of the North Carolina State government complex. Economist Timothy Aylor with the North Carolina Department of Commerce Labor and Economic Analysis Division provided an informative and encouraging overview of current economic conditions and indicators.

KBR Building Group’s James H. Foulke III, assistant project manager, introduced many of the day’s presenters. “Turnout for this event was better than expected...a wonderful opportunity to meet current and potential client representatives,” said Foulke.

An agenda highlight was a presentation titled “Opportunities in Energy,” by Melvin Stroble, REM/Project Manager with engineering giant Black & Veatch.

Other organizations that presented included the North Carolina State Construction Office, North Carolina Bar Association Construction Law Section, the University of North Carolina System, City of Greenville North Carolina, Office of the North Carolina Secretary of Administration, National Association of Minority Contractors, Wake County Public School System, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and the N.C. State University Capital Projects Program.

About North Carolina Industry Day — The annual Industry Day event was originally started in 2012 to promote upcoming KBR Building Group projects at UNC-Charlotte and the surrounding area, including Upstate South Carolina. Client, government, and institutional representatives in attendance asked for time to share information with attendees on additional opportunities and the tradition was born. Industry Day is typically held in the January/February timeframe to take advantage of slower winter activity. The focus of the half-day meeting is on planned construction procurement and ABI projected opportunities in the 12-24 month cycle ahead.
