South Carolina Chamber and S.C. OSHA Recognize KBR/Turner Project Team for Outstanding Safety Record — 5 Million Labor Hours Worked without a Lost-Time Incident at Boeing South Carolina Site
March 14, 2012

Columbia, SC — Today at a special safety program recognition event the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce recognized member companies and their employees statewide who had a commendable lost-workday case rate during the 2011 calendar year.

Among the honorees was the joint venture of KBR Building Group and Turner Construction (KBR/Turner), design-builder for the Boeing South Carolina 787 Final Assembly and Delivery project in North Charleston.  In January 2012, KBR/Turner reached another impressive safety milestone at the Boeing site — 5 million labor hours worked without a lost-time incident since groundbreaking in November 2009.

Although a number of South Carolina companies were honored by the Chamber, KBR/Turner had the distinction of being the only entity singled out and given formal recognition for its outstanding accomplishments.  Dottie Ison, S.C. OSHA Administrator, made a brief presentation, commenting that fewer than 5% of construction projects reach 1 million hours without a lost workday case, let alone 5 million hours.

KBR/Turner | S.C. OSHA Formal Partnership Agreement — In April 2010, the South Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Administration (S.C. OSHA) signed a formal partnership agreement with the Joint Venture to assist KBR/Turner with creating and maintaining a safe and healthy environment for their workers. According to the S.C. Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR), this first-of-its-kind agreement signifies a unique working partnership between government and industry whereby resources of both the state OSHA program and private industry are used to identify and eliminate hazardous conditions at major construction sites.

About the Project | About the Team — KBR/Turner, with design partner BRPH, completed the Boeing South Carolina 787 Final Assembly Building in May 2011. Related project components completed by KBR/Turner since then include the Truck Inspection building, Welcome Center, Flightline, site cafeteria, and Delivery Center. KBR Building Group and Turner have been partnering on select major projects in the Carolinas for nearly 20 years. In 2011, KBR/Turner received a 2010 Boeing Performance Excellence Award. The Boeing Company issues the award annually to recognize suppliers who have achieved superior performance.  In addition, KBR/Turner was named 2010 General Contractor of the Year by the American Subcontractors Association (ASA) of the Carolinas (Charleston Chapter).
