Outstanding Safety Record Part of Celebration at Topping Out for McLeod Health Center for Intensive Care in Florence, South Carolina
May 21, 2012

KBR Building Group's team for the McLeod Center for Intensive Care recently hosted a traditional topping out ceremony and worker appreciation luncheon at the project site in Florence, South Carolina. KBR Building Group is providing construction management at risk services for this new, six-story intensive care unit (ICU) bed tower on the main hospital campus of McLeod Health which is McLeod Regional Medical Center. KBR Building Group's contract is valued at $59 million.

The topping out program included remarks by Dale Locklair and Marie Segars with McLeod Health, and KBR Building Group's Tony Grohman, Senior Project Manager, and Anthony Reed, Senior Superintendent. KBR Building Group's outstanding safety record of more than 180,000 man-hours without a lost-time incident was a recurring theme, as each speaker recognized the construction workforce for their personal dedication and commitment to working safely. Representatives from Design Strategies, the architect of record, also participated.

More than 175 attendees watched with excitement as the final steel beam complete with a U.S. flag, SC flag and an evergreen tree was hoisted by crane to the top of the structure. Approximately 100 construction workers representing nine subcontractors signed the beam before it was put in place. Hospital staff and visitors were also given the opportunity to add their signatures a few days in advance of the event.

The McLeod Center for Intensive Care, with all private rooms, is designed to accommodate a total of 120 beds. The 188,000-square-foot patient tower is located above the hospital's existing loading dock, boiler plant, emergency generators and kitchen/cafeteria. It is being constructed utilizing deep caissons, grade beams, long-span steel trusses and steel structure above the truss level. The exterior design incorporates both brick with punched windows and curtainwall components.  KBR Building Group's work on this project also includes a new six-story elevator tower situated between the ICU Tower and the existing 12-story Pavilion Tower.

The Center for Intensive Care is scheduled for completion in May of 2013.

McLeod Health has provided quality healthcare services to northeastern South Carolina residents for more than 100 years.
