This state-of-the-art 24-hour Emergency Care full-service hospital facility and medical office building for Roper St. Francis expanded access to high-quality, patient-centered healthcare in the Mt. Pleasant / Charleston area. The 219,000-square-foot hospital serves as a critical healthcare hub, offering a full range of medical services including emergency care, inpatient and outpatient treatment, surgical services, diagnostics, and specialized care.
Key components of the project included designing the facility to meet Seismic Class III standards and Category 4 hurricane wind resistance up to 150 mph. Essential design strategies were implemented to safeguard critical infrastructure, such as installing MEP systems on the hospital roof to prevent shutdowns during flooding events. The central energy plant was designed to support vital infrastructure, backed by primary utility power and emergency generators. Given the regional climate, HVAC systems serving patient rooms were integrated into the emergency power network to ensure patient comfort during vulnerable times of the year.
The project also involved the design of functional spaces, including emergency and trauma units, operating rooms, intensive care units (ICUs), inpatient rooms, outpatient clinics, diagnostic labs, nuclear medicine services, and administrative offices. All work adhered to regulatory and accreditation requirements, including those set by the Joint Commission, local health authorities, and environmental regulations. Sustainability initiatives were incorporated throughout the design, including energy-efficient systems and waste management programs.
The hospital significantly enhances the capacity of the regional healthcare system, reduces patient travel times for critical care, and supports future population growth and medical demand.
