787 Fuselage Production Building Program

Boeing’s new manufacturing complex was built specifically for the purpose of supplying structural components for Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner passenger jet. The complex was developed on 100 acres of a 310-acre greenfield site adjacent to the Charleston International Airport. The building program included a 455,000 sf carbon fiber composite fuselage production facility incorporating 70,000 sf of cleanroom manufacturing, 270,000 sf of conditioned general manufacturing, 2,000 sf of cooler/freezer capacity, and 23,000 sf of mezzanine-level office space. The program also included a 450,000 sf aft body optimization assignment including reconfigurations and expansions in two production facilities, a 310,000 sf assembly and integration facility, a 60,000 sf paint facility, a 13,000 sf central energy plant, along with additional support facilities, expansions, and site work.
