On May 2, 2018, BE&K Building Group and the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) celebrated the topping out of UHV’s future University Commons. Also in attendance were members of the University of Houston System and Gensler, the Architect of Record. A piece of steel decking was signed by numerous project team members and key stakeholders prior to being lifted into place for installation.
Having the opportunity to celebrate this significant milestone for this signature project for UHV within weeks of joining BE&K Building Group was extra special, said Read Ballew, Senior Vice President and Business Unit Leader for BE&K Building Group’s Texas regional operations. The experience only served to reaffirm why I joined BE&K Building Group; to build world-class facilities with top-notch professionals for exceptional clients like UHV.
The 80,000-square-foot, three-story facility will be the home for a new modern library known as the Learning Commons. It will also house the Student Government Association, Student Success Center, Student Life & Services department, and other student organizations. Additional student services and amenities will include a food court, coffee bar, bookstore, and study lounge. An outdoor seating area will be available on the third floor providing a panoramic view of the rest of the campus.
The University Commons is scheduled to open to students in January 2019 in time for the upcoming spring semester.
